February 7, 2012 by Sandra Mashihi

This free exercise, and dozens of others, were created for our book, Clueless: Coaching People Who Just Don’t Get It. You can learn more about Clueless by visiting our site or you can buy it from amazon.com today.

Purpose of Exercise: Provides awareness for clients by helping them explore the ways in which they typically respond to work and life stress, pressure, and challenges.

How to Administer and Use this Exercise to Facilitate Behavior Change: Every person responds to stress, pressures, and obstacles differently. When coaching, it is important for clients to understand their coping style and personality when adversity arises. This exercise rovides questions about positive vs. negative appraisal and perspectives, as well coping behaviors in relation to problems. For instance, does your client look at things optimistically or focus on the worst case scenario? Does your client take charge of the things within his or her control? Or, blame situation and others for the problem?
