Free Coaching Exercise: “Identifying My Stage of Change”

February 26, 2013 by Sandra Mashihi

This free exercise, and dozens of others, were created for our book, Clueless: Coaching People Who Just Don’t Get It. You can learn more about Clueless by visiting our site or you can buy it from amazon.com today.

Purpose of Exercise: Clients can identify which stage describes your change efforts for a specific behavior or habit.

How to Administer and Use this Exercise to Facilitate Behavior Change:  We all know that changing our habits is not easy! How many times have you attempted to make a change (e.g. lose weight, become healthier, be a better listener) and either didn’t know where to begin the “behavioral change journey”, got stuck with being consistent with it, or found yourself slipping back and relapsing into old habits. Without knowing that all those stages of changing are completely normal and part of the process, people are likely to quit their development efforts. This exercise helps you identify the “stage of change” you are at in order to help you progress with the behavioral change process. This exercise is a powerful strategy that is based on solid empirical research based on Prochaska & DiClemente’s Transtheoretical Model for coaches and change agents to utilize with their clients in order to get them to commit to a change program.
