HOT READS FOR THE PRACTITIONER

Title: The Impulse Factor: An Innovative Approach to Better Decision Making

Competency: decision making/judgment

Who benefits: everyone

Consultant Usage: accompanying Impulse Factor Test can assist executive coaches, career counselors, and trainers

What’s it about? Are you a risk manager or a potential seeker … or somewhere in between?  Do you dawdle and agonize over every little decision?  Or do you shoot from the hip and ask questions later.  Are you the Procrastinator type?  Or the Ready-Fire-Aim type?

If any of the above rings an internal bell with you, The Impulse Factor may be just what you need.  This recently published book is about making better decision by avoiding the extremes.

According to the author, many of us fall into one of two categories.  One type is risk managers.  RM’s are great at taking care of business-as-usual and seek stability that businesses need.  But they are slow to see opportunities and often slow growth because of their cautious nature.

The second type is the potential seekers.  PS’s are quick to see potential opportunities and are comfortable making quick and important decisions.  But they tend to be bulls-in-a-china-shop and apologize a lot for stepping on toes.

Segments of this book document bioscientific studies both in the corporate world and with hyperactive children.  I applaud the author’s effort to integrate scientific research into a business book; however, it does make sections of the book more difficult to read that I personally prefer.  Your experience may differ.

There are some great stories about decision makers, including some interesting tidbits on Bill Gates that makes for fun reading.

The book does an excellent job of offering suggestions on how to move the two extremes toward the center.  However, if I have one complaint, it that not enough emphasis is placed on acknowledging those individuals who naturally fall into the middle areas of the continuum between the risk managers and the potential seekers.

So if you are a potential seeker, jump on this book now!  If you are a risk manager, well, at least think about acquiring a copy.

Catch you later.
