TGIF – Is The End Of The World Near?

October 19, 2012 by Bill Bradley

As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.

Quote of the Week: “I recently learned something quite interesting about video games. Many young people have developed incredible hand, eye, and brain coordination in playing these games. The air force believes these kids will be our outstanding pilots should they fly our jets.”  Ronald Reagan 1983

Humor Break:

Bev to her grandson:  So are you in the top half of your class?

Grandson playing a video game: No, I’m one of the students who make the top half possible!

Stat of the Week: 7 billion hours a week playing video games.  Holy Crap!!! That’s bad news for productivity at work or school.  Of course the good news is that doesn’t leave much time for wars.  I guess the only war worth fighting is the 300 million minutes a day on Angry Birds.  The author of this article suggests that wasting time may not be such a waste of time after all.  She raises some interesting issues.  OMG! some companies are even providing video game rooms for employees Video Games at Work?.

Action Tip: Help end wars, download Angry Birds here or here.

The Self-Development Corner: More college courses the free and easy way: Online!  Instead of video games, try video lectures. Many of our readers are in IT.  Here are a couple of courses for you: (1) Heterogeneous Parallel Programming from the University of Illinois beginning this month, (2) Cryptography from Stanford University beginning November 5.  Of course if you are not quite ready for those more esoteric courses, start with Introduction to Computer Networks from the University of Washington beginning January 28.

Bill Bradley (mostly) retired after 35 years in organizational consulting, training and management development. During those years he worked internally with seven organizations and trained and consulted externally with more than 90 large and small businesses, government agencies, hospitals and schools.
