TGIF – The Road To The Top

April 20, 2012 by Bill Bradley

As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.

Quote of the Week: “Yesterday I was a dog. Today I’m a dog. Tomorrow I’ll probably still be a dog. Sigh… There’s so little hope for advancement.”  Snoopy (Charles M. Schulz)

Humor Break: The boss called one of his employees into the office. “Rob,” he said, “you’ve been with the company for a year. You have an incredible record. You started off in the mail room, one week later you were promoted to a sales position, and one month after that you were promoted to district manager of the sales department. Just four short months later, you were promoted to vice-president. Now, it’s time for me to retire, and I want you to take over the company. What do you say to that?”

“Thanks,” said the employee.

“Thanks?” the boss replied “That’s it?  That’s all you can say?”

“I suppose not,” the employee said. “Thanks, Dad.”

Stat of the Week: Friday is the most likely day of the week to think about your future.  Maybe it is because you have had a tough week.  Maybe it is because the week is winding down.  Maybe it was just a weak week.  Who knows?  Here is a career thought.  Upward movement has been slow over the past few years.  The good news … promotions are opening up.  The bad news … there is a backlog of promotable people.  Here is a Blog that offers 4 tips on misconceptions regarding career advancement.

Action Tip: If you consider yourself upwardly mobile, or coach others who have vertical aspirations, read The Unwritten Rules for the six skills you most need to succeed in your career path … and few tips on what not to do.

Weight Watch – Week:  (A personal 16 week Healthy Life style report)

The third week’s results are in: I LOST 1.8 pounds on the official digital scale.  Three weeks into the program and I am down 9.5 pounds.  This week I am going back and forth on the encouraged/discouraged scale.  My new healthy eating habits remain intact.  I kept up my exercise program.  Is it a myth or is it true that “old pounds” are harder to take off than “new pounds?”

I received a nice comment from reader Mike Smith.  In case you missed it I would like to share it with you.  “Secret for those evening snack/sweet desires: some good cheese. Seriously, it works. Secret to weight loss is to reduce carbs. Eliminate sugar and processed foods, especially breads. Read ‘What if It’s All Been a Big Fat Lie?’” Thank you Mike for that suggestion.

I read the article and it certainly gave me something to chew on.  (Ouch!)

Take it any way you can get it.  I received my first, first person complement this week.  An acquaintance said “Hey Bill, your face doesn’t look as puffy as it used to.”  Okay everyone, keep those encouraging remarks a comin’!

Bill Bradley (mostly) retired after 35 years in organizational consulting, training and management development. During those years he worked internally with seven organizations and trained and consulted externally with more than 90 large and small businesses, government agencies, hospitals and schools.
