Every week, I review blogs and other publications that cover talent development to find the very best talent development posts. This week, you’ll find pointers to pieces improving hiring, talent assessment, no time to learn, and social learning.
From DDI World: Hiring System Changes: 5 Points to Maximize Impact and Minimize Stress
“Unfortunately, many well-designed selection systems fail to achieve the impact and business results for which they were deployed for the simple reason that key aspects of change management have been overlooked.”
From Right Management: Talent Assessment, Talent Development, Talent Management
“When competency based assessments are integrated components of your recruiting, development and advancement processes, you significantly improve the odds that you are hiring and advancing the individuals who are most likely to deliver on the business’s strategic priorities.”
From Stephen J. Gill: No Time to Learn
“One of the concerns that worry training and learning professionals most about leading culture change in their organizations is that managers will say that they don’t have time to facilitate and support employee development. These managers don’t value learning.”
Wally’s Comment: In addition to the things that Stephen Gill mentions, consider the workload of the managers in question and what they receive praise and rewards for. Sometimes a change in those things can spark a change in “attitude.”
From HRExaminer: Getting Committed to Social Learning
“But what if people in HR and Sales could tap into the knowledge of their colleagues in Finance so that they could improve their analytical ability? Companies don’t need formal training to help employees improve this and other skills—they just need employees who are willing to share what they know, and people who are open to learning from their peers. What they need is people who are committed.”
