Every week, I review blogs that cover talent development to find the very best talent development posts. This week, you’ll find pointers to pieces about job boards in the hiring process, the importance of a college degree as a job requirement, global trends in talent management, and War for Talent, the sequel.
From TLNT: New Source of Hire Study: Job Boards Are Leading Source of External Hires
“A new study by HR technology provider SilkRoad shows that jobs search site Indeed.com is the leading source of external hires for its 700+ customers, providing 42 percent more new employees than CareerBuilder, the No. 2 source.”
Wally’s Comment: Read this post for some insight into the role that job boards do and may play in your hiring process.
From Sharlyn Lauby: Balancing Education and Work Experience
“I wrote a post some time ago about the purpose of a college degree. You can check it out here. Someone recently commented on the post – it’s a great comment and deserves some attention, so I wanted to resurrect the conversation. When it comes to the relationship between education and experience, there are several things to consider:”
Wally’s Comment: Sharlyn Lauby’s two posts and the comments on them will give you a good overview of the current debate about the importance of a college degree as a job requirement. Let me share two general observations. First, the importance of a college degree relative to experience and performance declines over the course of a career. Second, the most important thing a degree tells you is that the person who earned it has learned to finish something that takes work, following some rules, and more than a couple of days.
From John Hollon: Survey: Successful Companies Have an Employee-Focused Culture
“It’s not often that you get a worldwide look at how organizations assess and handle talent, but the new Global Assessment Trends Report from SHL (a global maker of talent measurement solutions) does just that.”
Wally’s Comment: There’s a lot of good stuff in the post and in the full (40 page) report, which is available for a free PDF download after you answer the usual battery of questions.
From John Sullivan: The War for Talent Is Returning; Don’t Get Caught Unprepared
“Here is a heads-up alert for you: be prepared because not only will the infamous “War For Talent†be returning to impact your firm, but it is already underway in its full intensity here in the Silicon Valley. Begin planning for this next round of talent wars, because once the intense competition begins, there simply won’t be time to catch up with, no less get ahead of your talent competition. If you’re not familiar with the “war for talent†phenomena, it involves a prolonged period of intense competition where top applicants are both scarce and arrogant, employees leave by the droves, firms regularly raid each other for talent, and bidding for top talent is commonplace.”
Wally’s Comment: This is Dr. Sullivan’s usual, thorough treatment of a subject. You should take some time with it and also check the comments and backlinks.
