7/12/12: Top Talent Development Posts this Week

July 12, 2012 by Wally Bock

Every week, I review blogs and other publications that cover talent development to find the very best talent development posts. This week, you’ll find pointers to pieces about why businesses fail to retain top talent, making the business case for HR analytics, identifying the gaps in your succession plan, and erecruiting.

From Forbes: Career-Development Gap: Why Employers Fail to Retain Top Talent

“Top talent is the most important source of competitive advantage for every corporation, especially in high tech industries that compete on creativity and innovation. That’s why these companies have the proper management techniques and the right career-development programs to retain top talent, or do they?”

Wally’s Comment: There is a kind of gravitational pull that works to keep people at your company. It’s the natural state of things. And there are things you can do that make your company a better place to be. But there are also forces luring your top talent away and things that you do that push them toward the door.

From Cathy Missildine-Martin: The First Step in Moving from Metrics to Workforce Analytics

“Have you decided it’s time to graduate from HR metrics to HR analytics?  I believe it’s more than time; we have been tracking just metrics long enough.  It’s time to use the HR data we have been tracking, turning that data into analytics delivering insight to our leaders so that our companies can be best they can be.”

Wally’s Comment: Here’s some good advice on making the business case for analytics.

From Sean Conrad: Identify Workforce and Leadership Gaps with Succession Planning

“Do you know the leadership potential of your current talent? Whether you have the leaders you need in positions critical to organization strategy? What areas of your company would be at risk if someone left? These questions can all be answered through a strategic and integrated succession plan.”

Wally’s Comment: Sean Conrad shares four steps for analyzing your current succession situation, including pinpointing the gaps you should fill.

From the Human Capital League: The New Age of Recruiting: eRecruiting

“On any given day, what percentage of young professionals do you think pick up a newspaper? What percentage do you think spend time on Twitter and Facebook? If you’re familiar with the demographic, then you know that the difference between those numbers is enormous.”

Wally’s Comment: Many of the people you want to hire simply don’t pay attention to what is often called “traditional” media. Social media are the water they swim in. That can be good news if you know what to do about it.
