Every week, I review blogs and other publications that cover talent development to find the very best talent development posts. This week, you’ll find pointers to pieces on developing your own leaders and the importance and prevalence and techniques of social recruiting.
From Kyle Lagunas via TLNT: 3 Reasons to Grow the Talent You Have Into the Leaders You Need
“Here’s what I don’t understand: Why is the process of finding a leader – whether to backfill someone or to fill a new role – often treated as an isolated event rather than an ongoing process?”
Wally’s Comment: The real value of this post isn’t in the three reasons mentioned in the headline. It’s in the “how-to’s” that are a little further down.
From Human Resource Executive Online: Connecting to Generation C
“As a new generation emerges that is connected socially and technologically like never before, organizations must adapt their talent-management strategies in order to engage with these workers on their terms and leverage their next-generation skills and know-how.”
Wally’s Comment: Here are some ideas on how to reach Generation C – the Connected Generation. As you might expect, “social” is part of the mix.
From Dr. Katherine Jones at Bersin: Going Social with Sourcing
“It’s not a ‘nice-to-have’ – it’s a ‘gotta-have.’ Using social media as a means to source talent is here to stay. In my webcast last week on how to get started with social sourcing (you can see a replay at www.bersin.com), we focused mainly on the ‘Big Three’ – LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter – and how they are used in broadcasting open jobs and in active sourcing and recruiting. The prevalence of these three is primarily due to time in the market—with LinkedIn as the most used source, followed by Twitter.”
Wally’s Comment: Here’s a list of social tools that goes beyond LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter with descriptions of each.
From Josh Tolan via TLNT: Crazy Social Media Recruitment Techniques: Do They Work?
“At one time, social media recruiting was a new and daring phenomenon. Now, at least 90 percent of recruiters use social media in the hiring process to find great candidates. Some companies have even taken social recruiting out on a limb. Instead of using the social platform merely to engage with talent and promote openings, these companies are coming up with some truly out-of-the-box ways to attract talent.”
Wally’s Comment: Here are some social media recruiting techniques. Josh Tolan calls them “out of the box,” but that may not be the case for long.
