9/13/12: Top Talent Development Posts this Week

September 13, 2012 by Wally Bock

Every week, I review blogs and other publications that cover talent development to find the very best talent development posts. This week, you’ll find pointers to pieces on workforce planning, lifelong learning, hiring and developing, and how most organizations fall short at managing talent.

From Jon Ingham: Workforce Planning is a Necessity

“My point here is that as WFP becomes more creative, shifting from staff numbers to major capabilities needs, it provides a new and useful focus for L&D.”

Wally’s Comment: Most of the talk about workforce planning seems fairly industrial. Enter Jon Ingham with the quaint thought that perhaps, in this knowledge worker world, a different approach might be in order.

From Stephen J. Gill: Lifelong Employee Learning

“The Evolllution, in a report titled, Lifelong Education and Labor Market Needs, presents findings that support a key role for post-secondary institutions in educating workers for jobs that have gone unfilled while unemployment remains high, and in continually improving the position of workers within companies.”

Wally’s Comment: Stephen J. Gill does a superb job of describing the different post-secondary educational institutions in the US and the role they may play in everyone’s lifelong learning. Don’t limit your thinking in this area to courses or even to classes. Consider resources, too. Bill Bradley’s post on this site describes one treasure trove.

From Jesse Lyn Stoner: Want a Strong Team? You Have 2 Choices: HIRE Winners or DEVELOP Winners

“One of the key business needs of any organization is a ready-now pool of talent and future leaders.”

Wally’s Comment: For most companies, especially smaller, growing ones, this is not an either/or proposition. Jesse Lyn Stoner offers some guidance and perspective about how to get the talent development mix to be magic for you.

From Korn/Ferry: Most Organizations Fall Short At Managing Talent

“As the still-struggling world economy forces them to do more with less, only one third of organizations manage their talent effectively, according to a survey of global leaders by the Korn/Ferry Institute.”

Wally’s Comment: Read this post and the one just above it together.
