This free exercise, and dozens of others, were created for our book, Clueless: Coaching People Who Just Don’t Get It. You can learn more about Clueless by visiting our site or you can buy it from amazon.com today.

Purpose of Exercise: A technique for identifying what changes clients are most motivated to make.

How to Administer and Use this Exercise to Facilitate Behavior Change: As I coach my clients, I often find that getting them motivated to take action is one of the more challenging aspects of our development sessions.

It’s one thing to become of aware of strengths and development areas, however it’s another thing to actually take action on them. This exercise is a powerful technique to help facilitate “change talk” with your clients or those you seek to motivate. It specifically describes a step-by-step process of helping people see the reasons or importance for making a change with a particular habit or behavior.
