“42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot.”

Steven Wright

Another addition of leadership and talent management “facts” from all over the world.  Some intuitive and some not….what do you think?

1. A recent survey by Harris Interactive suggests that 91% of office workers in the U.S., U.K., and Australia bring work home and 14% reported just not taking a vacation at all during the year.

2. A study of Sun Microsystems employees by Capital Analytics found that talent with mentors were 20% more likely to get raises and six times more likely to receive promotions. Among graduates of 26 top business schools, those with protégés earned $25,075 more on average from 2008 to 2010 than colleagues who did no mentoring, workplace researcher Catalyst found.

3. The 2013 Kelly Global Workforce Index (122,000 people across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa regions) revealed that 54% agreed that employer provided training is effective in building skills but 70% reported that on-the-job experience is the best teacher (only 26% felt seminars/webinars were helpful).

For those who took company sponsored training, 57% wanted it for future internal promotion opportunities and 47% felt it would be useful for promotion/advancement at another company.

4. Gallup’s 2010-2012 State of American Workplace survey revealed that 70 percent of U.S. workers fail to work up to their full potential and 52% reported being “not-engaged” and another 18% said they were “actively disengaged.”

5. Quantum Workplace released a 3-year study that showed publicly traded companies with engaged employees saw 2.5 times more growth in their stock price than those with lower employee engagement.  Further, companies with greater employee engagement – as determined by their answers to a range of questions about their connection to work – saw 18% revenue growth during the past 12 months.

6. When being considered for the same job, mothers were significantly less likely to be recommended for hire, and when they were, they were offered $11,000.00 less in starting salary, on average, than childless women (fathers were not penalized at all).

7. A recent study by the Human Capital Institute and Lee Hecht Harrison, based on 230 organizations around the world, focused on the executive coaching field.  Nearly 60% report that their executives meet with coaches on an as-needed basis and 32% report that coaching is not limited to the most senior leaders.  Challenges and barriers included lack of resources (78%), lack of upper management support (66%), lack of knowledge on how to implement coaching (40%) and lack of established guidelines for leaders (69%).

8. In a recent study about what people take with them on vacations (639 U.S. employees via an online poll), 43% said they take their smartphones, 33% take all their electronic devices, 15% take a tablet or laptop and 9% reported they don’t bring anything along with them (except clothes).

9. Employees who get vigorous exercise during the week are twice as likely to get a good night’s sleep (6 hours and 51 minutes, average on weeknights) compared to non-exercisers. Also, about six in ten of non-exercisers (61%) say they rarely or never have a good night’s sleep on work nights.

10. Research by Noah Goldstein of UCLA and Nicholas Hays of NYU suggest that the idea of an association with a powerful person is all it takes for men to feel that some power has rubbed off on them. The effect doesn’t apply to women.

Back to research some new talent development facts….Be well….
