What’s it about? It is the start of the new year.  Hopefully you are giving some consideration to how you would like to develop this year.  There is an old line from a country and western tune that goes “If you are standing still you are falling behind”.  However hokey, tis true.

I have heard from several sources that we need to devote a minimum of 5% of our work time to our own development if we want to keep up.  In this age of information overload and short time lines for obsolescence of knowledge, that figure may be low.  Whatever the percentage, learning remains critical to high levels of performance.

One way to learn is from the successes and failures of others.  Harvard Business Press has developed a series of short books called Lessons Learned about different topics.

They recently published Never Stop Learning: Lessons Learned.  There are 14 short essays by senior leaders in industry, the public sector, and academia on the most pressing issues they’ve faced.

If you have a leadership role of any kind, at work or in your personal life, and if you like reading other people’s stories, this is a good way to kick start your learning for the new year.

Catch you later.
