Wouldn’t it be great if change would wait until you’re ready? Too late!
It seems like only a few months ago that online learning was a coming thing, but now it’s here. It doesn’t seem that long ago that the discussion was about how many students could participate in a MOOC, but now Fortune informs us that “The online MBA comes of age.” And, the Mercury News tells us about “Lots of offerings in online education.”
More learning opportunities online is only part of the story. “Online” now means just about anywhere thanks to tablets and smartphones and mobile networks.
What are you doing about it? Have you thought about how online learning will affect the way you do things?
Online learning will affect recruiting. You will have to evaluate credentials that don’t come from traditional sources and learning that doesn’t offer a credential. And how will you evaluate a candidate’s ability to learn?
Online learning will affect performance management. I don’t agree completely with Harold Jarche that “Work is learning and learning is the work,” but I’m sure that learning is and will be a big part of the work. Will you measure it? How? And how will you integrate learning into your performance expectations?
Online learning will change the work environment. If the work environment will be a learning environment, then the people who work at your place will need the tools and skills to make the most of it. How will you help them learn faster and better?
Don’t wait on this one. Don’t start to prepare to begin to get ready until you’re left behind. Make the changes you need so the people who work at your company will be able to succeed in the new world of learning.
