As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.
Quote of the Week: “Sure telecommuting is great. Until you realize you’ve got nothing but moldy cheese in the refrigerator for lunch, you’re way out of the gossip loop and you never get the Friday afternoon back-slaps.â€Â Thomas Wailgum
Humor Break:
Bev: Al, do you prefer working at home or going to the office?
Al: I prefer eating, sleeping and weekends.
Stat of the Week: 100%. That is the percentage of employees working at home for the Web-services company Automattic Inc. The topic isn’t new, but the percentage is for this 123 person company, working in 26 countries, 94 cities and 28 U.S. states. We at Envisia Learning really hope they do their jobs well. They host the servers for the blogging platform WordPress.com, which is the one we are on. How is all this work-at-home stuff working out? Well from 2005 – 2010 the number of employees working at home rose 66%. However, the total work-at-home force remains around 2.5%.  Automattic Inc. certainly beats the average!
Volunteers Needed: A good friend of mine from Southern California is trying to raise money for a October 21 Walkathon for the American Lung Association. Donations are tax-deductible and fund lung disease researchers, educational programs such as asthma management for children and tobacco cessation for adults, and advocacy initiatives in support of people with emphysema and COPD, lung cancer and other lung diseases. We have many good-hearted SoCal readers. How about some local support? If you have healthy lungs please consider a donation of any size to help those who don’t. My friend thanks you. I thank you.
The Self-Development Corner: Over the next few weeks I am going to urge you to go back to college the free and easy way: Online! We have a large number of readers in health care professions. Here are some ideas for you: (1) Community Change in Public Health from Johns Hopkins begins October 22; (2) Principles of Obesity Economics from Johns Hopkins also begins October 22; (3) Principles of Public Health from UC Irvine begins January, 2013 (but sign up now – it is incredibly easy – there are 2 recommended textbooks you can get started with in your reading).
As usual, I always get a chuckle and something to think about…thanks. I am traveling for the rest of the month so will read posts as time permits and I will count on the predictable chuckles. Take care…
