TGIF – Don’t Judge A Desk By Its Clutter

April 13, 2012 by Bill Bradley

As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.

You gotta a problem with this?

Quote of the Week: If a cluttered desk signs a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?  Albert Einstein

Humor Break:  Famous management guru George Costanza (think Seinfeld) presents: Tips for Working Hard – Messy desk. “Top management can get away with a clean desk. For the rest of us, it looks like you’re not working hard enough. Build huge piles of documents around your workspace. To the observer, last year’s work looks the same as today’s work; it’s volume that counts. Pile them high and wide. If you know somebody is coming to your cubicle, bury the document you’ll need halfway down in an existing stack and rummage for it when he/she arrives.”  (This humor works best if you can “hear” George’s voice as you read it.)

Stat of the Week: The Forbeswoman (Jenna Goudreau) reports on The Dangers Of A Messy Desk.  Her key point is that according to a recent study by a recruting firm a majority of Americans (57%) admit they judge coworkers by how clean or dirty they keep their workspaces.  If this speaks to you, she has her own list of 6 clean desk habits and photo gallery of Top 10 Tricks To De-Clutter Your Office.  Good luck.

Action Tip: January 9 was National Clean-Off-Your-Desk Day, but with Spring here, why not spring into action and make a date with yourself to clean up your desk mess and get yourself righteously organized!

Weight Watch – Week 3:  (A personal 16 week Healthy Life style report)

The second week’s results are in: I LOST 3.1 pounds on the official digital scale.  Two weeks into the program and I am down 7.7.  I wonder if there is a difference in new pounds and old pounds.  Are these pounds I am losing from this past decade?  What about the pounds from the past century?  Are they harder to lose?

I didn’t expect to lose as much as the first week.  The proverbial “everyone” says that each week gets a little more difficult to lose those old pounds.  Still, progress has been made and I am of good cheer.  I have noticed in this second week that my “hunger voice” has diminished a little.  That is a very good thing.

April is Emotional Overeaters Month.  The Mayo Clinic has some good advice on the Mood/Food connection.

Bill Bradley (mostly) retired after 35 years in organizational consulting, training and management development. During those years he worked internally with seven organizations and trained and consulted externally with more than 90 large and small businesses, government agencies, hospitals and schools.
