TGIF – #@%&* Drivers

September 30, 2011 by Bill Bradley

As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.

Quote of the Week: “Chevrolet is coming out with a new feature on their cars that will let drivers update their Facebook status in the car. I was getting so bored talking on the phone and texting while driving.”  Jay Leno (Feb. 2011)

Humor Break: A Georgia State Trooper pulls over an old pick-up on a rural road. He says to the driver, “Got any ID?”  The driver says, ” ‘Bout what? ”

I was driving behind a truck and I could see through the rear window that the driver was holding his cell phone to his ear with one hand and holding his coffee cup with the other. Then I noticed his bumper sticker: HOW AM I DRIVING? I pulled along side him at a stoplight, rolled down my window and said to him, “I give up. How?”

Stat of the Week: Take a good look around you the next time you are driving.  Look at the four nearest vehicles and see if some dangerous Nut is online.  If they are all “clear”, chances are good that you are the Nut.  19% of smart-phone users surveyed said they had “webbed” while behind the wheels of their vehicles, according to State Farm, the insurance company. Respondents said they had done such things as checking Facebook, reading e-mails, and using apps.

This just in: It’s worse than I thought!!!

Action Tip: When driving, assume someone near you is busy phoning, texting, or webbing.  Use landmarks and stay 2 second behind the car in front of you (especially 49er football fans who drive) and get out of the way of fast approaching cars or cars on your bumper.  You may be driving safely, but when you add drugs, alcohol, bad moods, and phones to the mix, over half of the (other) drivers are not driving safely.

Volunteering: A good way to meet folks who “web a lot” while driving is at your local hospital.  Volunteering at hospitals is one of the oldest volunteer opportunities still going and still needed.  Check out How to Volunteer at a Hospital.
