September 20, 2013 by Bill Bradley

As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.

Quote of the Week: “Practice Golden-Rule 1 of Management in everything you do. Manage others the way you would like to be managed.” Brian Tracey

Humor Break:

Al: Boy, I had a tough day.
Bev: What happened?
Al: My boss told me to get my butt in gear.
Bev: What did you say?
Al: I told him I was shiftless.

Stat of the Week: The top 3 behaviors managers must avoid: Bad manager, bad manager! Don’t argue with me, just stop doing these three things. (Oops, I just did two of those things. Lo Siento.)

Action Tip: As the short article points out, it is not enough to just build on your strengths. Bad behaviors have long memories. And it takes a lot of positive deposits to offset a few bad interactions. So if you are a leader, take special care to eliminate negative behavior.

Self-Development Corner:  BREAKING NEWS – Yesterday The University of Pennsylvania, The Wharton School announced a 4-course MBA Foundation Series through Coursera (free online university courses). If you are even remotely considering an MBA in your future or if you want to make your resume standout, then you should take a close look at this series. In case you don’t know, Wharton has the third highest rated MBA business school rating (behind only Harvard and Stanford) in the US, according to the 2013 annual rankings by US News and World Report. The first course began this week, so this weekend would be a very good time to make your decision. A verified certificate of mastery is available if you complete all four courses successfully.  The courses are free.  There is a fee for verified certificate.

Overall it is another very busy week as brick and mortar and online schools start their fall programs all over the world. Below are 8 suggestions, depending on language preferences:

For our French readers Initiation à la programmation (en C++) (Sept 23, 7 weeks, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) and/or Initiation à la programmation (en Java) (Sept 23, 7 weeks, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne).

Algunos de nuestros lectores españoles pueden sé un estudiante universitario que podría beneficiarse de Conceptos y Herramientas para la Física Universitaria (Sept 23, 9 weeks, Tecnológico de Monterrey).

For our English readers and those learning English, there is an excellent course to brush up on your writing skills or assist those in ESL programs: Crafting an Effective Writer: Tools of the Trade (Sept 21, 6 weeks, Mt. San Jacinto College).

If by some chance you need a course in statistics, then this one is for you (it is billed as “gentle”) – maybe your kids could benefit too - Statistics One (Sept 22, 12 weeks, Princeton); more advanced would be Computing for Data Analysis (Sept 23, 4 weeks, Johns Hopkins University) and Scientific Computing (Sept 25, 10 weeks, University of Washington).

If that isn’t enough, go for Computer Architecture (Sept 23, 11 weeks, Princeton University.

Happy learning.
