TGIF – Sleep On This!

March 1, 2013 by Bill Bradley

As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.

Quote of the Week: “Sleep is the best meditation.”  Dalia Lama

Humor Break:

Bev: Al, what is wrong?  You don’t look yourself this morning.

Al: Last night I dreamed I had insomnia. I woke up exhausted, yet too well rested to go back to sleep.

Stat of the Week: Here are your stats of the week: 43%, 60%, 61%, 74%, 9%, 71%, 11%. These are just some of the numbers at the Sleep Working sidebar in a very interesting article: Go Ahead, Hit the Snooze Button.  Want more stats?  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 40.6 million American workers, or 30% of the civilian workforce, don’t get enough rest. And Harvard scientists estimated that in 2011 sleep deprivation cost U.S. companies $63.2 billion in lost productivity.

Action Tip: Consider finding a way to get 20-30 minutes of shuteye sometime during your work day, especially near those times when you get most drowsy.  Works for me.

Self-Development Corner: If you are self-development oriented or interested in business strategies, next week you hit the jackpot with one course beginning today and five courses starting on Monday or Tuesday from Coursera, the free online university.  If you are in a self-development mood what could be better than Know Thyself (March 4, 10 weeks, University of Virginia).  If you want to develop your strategic thinking skills, how about Leading Strategic Innovation in Organizations (March 5, 8 weeks, Vanderbilt), Model Thinking (March 4, 10 weeks, University of Michigan), or Foundations of Business Strategy (March 4, 6 weeks, University of Virginia), also, for the more about what the computer can do for you or your business, try Social Network Analysis (March 4, 9 weeks, University of Michigan); and Internet History, Technology, and Security (March 1, 13 weeks, University of Michigan).

Bill Bradley (mostly) retired after 35 years in organizational consulting, training and management development. During those years he worked internally with seven organizations and trained and consulted externally with more than 90 large and small businesses, government agencies, hospitals and schools.

  1. Interesting stats on sleep needs or deprivation. I just saw an interview on TV that strongly hit the need for 8 hours a night. I keep seeing this info. I am working on it…
and these classes look great. I do not have the time while I am working but this is something to look forward to when I am not. Thanks and have a nice weekend.
