As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.
The holiday season has just ended. Do you have any regrets … and do you measure them in pounds? This week’s TGIF focus is on food:
Quote of the Week: “I am the one who got myself fat, who did all the eating. So I had to take full responsibility for it.” Kirstie Alley, actress
Humor Break: “For the first time ever, overweight people outnumber average people in America. Doesn’t that make overweight the average then? Last month you were fat, now you’re average – hey, let’s get a pizza!” Â Jay Leno
Stat of the Week: McKinsey Quarterly reports that direct medical costs for obesity runs about $160 BILLION a year. Increased obesity related spending brings the annual costs to $450 BILLION.
In a companion Stat, research from George Washington University suggests that the annual cost of being obese is $4,879.00 for a woman and $2,646.00 for a man adding such things as sick days, lost productivity and even the need for extra gasoline. Colleague Dr. Ken Nowack will have more to say about this in a future post.
Action Tip: Stress/Health Free Trial – Want to find out how you compare to over 25,000 other working professionals on your eating and nutritional habits? Take a look at our website and read about our stress and health risk appraisal called StressScan. Volunteering: Not everyone suffers from obesity. Not everyone gets enough to eat. How about serving a meal to someone in need. There is a homeless shelter near you that can use a volunteer. Find the nearest shelter through Directory of Local Homeless Service Organizations.
