TGIF – Food For Thought

January 7, 2011 by Bill Bradley

As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.

The holiday season has just ended.  Do you have any regrets … and do you measure them in pounds?  This week’s TGIF focus is on food:

Quote of the Week: “I am the one who got myself fat, who did all the eating. So I had to take full responsibility for it.”  Kirstie Alley, actress

Humor Break: “For the first time ever, overweight people outnumber average people in America. Doesn’t that make overweight the average then? Last month you were fat, now you’re average – hey, let’s get a pizza!”  Jay Leno

Stat of the Week: McKinsey Quarterly reports that direct medical costs for obesity runs about $160 BILLION a year.  Increased obesity related spending brings the annual costs to $450 BILLION.

In a companion Stat, research from George Washington University suggests that the annual cost of being obese is $4,879.00 for a woman and $2,646.00 for a man adding such things as sick days, lost productivity and even the need for extra gasoline.  Colleague Dr. Ken Nowack will have more to say about this in a future post.

Action Tip: Stress/Health Free Trial –  Want to find out how you compare to over 25,000 other working professionals on your eating and nutritional habits?  Take a look at our website and read about our stress and health risk appraisal called StressScan. If you are interested in a free trial, let us know at ken@envisiaonline.com and we will set you up with a free trial.

Volunteering: Not everyone suffers from obesity.  Not everyone gets enough to eat.  How about serving a meal to someone in need.  There is a homeless shelter near you that can use a volunteer.  Find the nearest shelter through Directory of Local Homeless Service Organizations.
