TGIF – Attention Wal-Mart Shoppers

September 9, 2011 by Bill Bradley

As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.

Quote of the Week: With my sunglasses on, I’m Jack Nicholson. Without them, I’m fat and 60. Jack Nicholson

Humor Break: I know I got a problem.  When I stepped on the scale this morning it said, “To be continued.”

Stat of the Week: Might want to take this stat with a grain of salt (oops, maybe that is the problem).  Research suggests that one additional Wal-Mart Supercenter per 100,000 residents increases individuals’ probability of being obese by 2.3%.  Researchers, publishing in the Journal of Urban Economics, say their study implies that proliferation of Wal-Mart Supercenters, which offer food at highly discounted prices, explains 10.5% of the U.S. rise in obesity since the late 1980s.  According to an unconfirmed source, Wal-Mart’s response was “Fat chance.”

Action Tip: If you are overweight (come on now, you know who you are), add sit-ups or ab crunches to your daily regimen.  Or you might consider Small Habit Change? Big Health Result from author BJ Gallagher.

Volunteering: Want to do your body and other bodies some good?  Get rid of some unwanted calories by volunteering at Habitat for Humanity.  Help build a house in your area for a family desperate for home.  Carpenter skills optional.

  1. As usual, love the humor. What I am still thinking about is the Wal-Mart stat. While it only implies but doesn’t actually prove, it is still worth thinking about not only with Wal-Mart but Costco or any store that offers high volume at lower cost.
