As the week winds down, we wind down with some tidbits for your information, education, health, and enjoyment.
Quote of the Week: “The productivity of work is not the responsibility of the worker but of the manager.” Peter Drucker
Humor Break:
Bev: Al, it says here in the paper that good workers get assigned all the work.
Al: Yeah, but the really good workers will find a way to get out of it.
Stat of the Week: $370 billion in lost productivity annually. This is the cost to Corporate America caused by actively disengaged employees. This is a Gallup Poll number reported in a book chapter entitled The Five Social Appetites That Drive High Performance. Best subtitle in this excellent writing on leadership and corporate culture is “Corporate America Is Due for a Lifestyle Changeâ€. This is a worthy read and it is free.
Action Tip: Not engaged in your current job? Check out the Great Place to Work list of … get this … great places to work. Over 10 million employees contributed to the largest employee survey worldwide. Data from these surveys also serve as data for Fortune Magazine’s annual 100 Best Places to Work. Lots of info here!
Check It Out: For the next few weeks I shall give you an update on my back-to-school experience at Coursera. Enrolling in my first course took almost 20 seconds. Enrolling in two other courses took a one-button click. What happens after you enroll is an email response telling you that you will receive all the information you need a few days prior to the course start date. I have received the first course email. It covers all my questions. I will tell you more about that in the next TGIF. I will tease you with this bit of information. There are currently more than 70,000 students worldwide enrolled in this course!
For my second course I also received a second email, this from the professor suggesting I read a recent article he wrote. It is a short, fascinating read on what a professor can learn from teaching online courses. Check It Out!
